Have you ever woken up and had nowhere to go? Have you ever held onto a memory for too long? Have you ever remembered a place for what you wished it was? Do you remember the smell of ozone and sea air at 2am? Do you still hear the faint crashing of waves, coupled with the final bars of Tangerine slowly swelling in and out? Do you remember the laughing, the crying, the fighting, and the unrelenting sounds of turbo fired V8’s aimlessly prowling up and down Ocean Avenue? The fluttering of lights? The clicking of the wheel? The clown? The joy of the Gavioli and Wurlitzer? The thing that you hoped would last forever at 10pm, seemingly erased by morning? Erased like footprints in the sand being chipped away by a rising tide? Yet the tide gets higher. The memories fade. The sound of the Wurlitzer grows dimmer, and the fog settles in. The sea air gets thicker, and the seagulls hover. The moon rises over the ocean, the sun soon follows, and the tide will always go out.
2025 marks 17 years of continued work documenting the New Jersey Shore in the Afterlife series. The development/ redevelopment of these small towns has been immensely sped up during this short time period (2024-2025). These images document the final throes of what made these places special – “Tide Goes Out”

Most images are available as artist-made, toned silver gelatin contact prints. Prints can be ordered in any one of three sizes: 22×28, 30×40 and 40×60. Each image in the edition is handcrafted in the dark room, and is unique.
