Edward Steichen
1879 – 1973
Painter, photographer, and curator, Edward Steichen’s early fascination with photography led him to become one of the first highly acclaimed photographic “artists”. In 1902, Steichen, along with Alfred Steiglitz, formed the group of photographers known as the Photo Secession movement that published the innovative art journal “Camera Work”. His reputation as a seminal fashion and celebrity photographer was later established as a frequent contributor to Condé Nast’s “Vogue” and “Vanity Fair.” In 1947 he was appointed as director of photography at MOMA where his groundbreaking 1955 “Family of Man” exhibition travelled worldwide to be seen by more than 9 million people
