Always exceeding expectations, Michael’s 2022 show for Gallery 270 links four portfolios, Michael Massaia: “The New Romantic”. Though NYC features prominently in three of four portfolios represented, the visually surprising juxtaposition of the city’s last remaining phone booths with landscapes of Central Park and waterscapes of The Atlantic Ocean begs the question posed by its inclusion amidst the work presented. And what is on display is more of the unceasing artistic achievement by this human force of nature, pushing the boundaries yet again, by the composite negatives, redevelopment of the prints, and use of selective chemical multi-toning that reveals sublime color shading. Ranging from magenta’s to warm-toned browns, tan, ochre, peach to cool grays, blues, and greens, silver gelatin printing has never looked like this! One image debuting here, Endings, was taken in 2010, and never published or shown before. Michael was unable to make a print to his satisfaction until he was able to invent the specific process required to present the tonal qualities employed in the photo and throughout The New Romantic show for the first time. Gallery 270 is thrilled to premiere select images from Deep In A Dream II, Drop The Sun, It’s In The Leaving, and The New Romantic portfolios through July 31, 2022.
