Show Opens November 22nd 2013
This exhibit showcases a completely new twist on the venerable platinum printing process perfected in the late 19th century. Platinum prints have been traditionally made on matte surface rag type papers and revered for their durability, beautiful warmth and the greatest tonal range of any chemical based printing process. However, most platinum prints lack the rich, deep black tones found in the best silver-gelatin prints. Michael Massaia has developed a revolutionary way to treat modern baryta papers that combines the best aspects of both the platinum and silver gelatin processes in a single photograph. His endless determination, experimentation and painstaking trial and error over a 6 year period has produced striking photographs that are simply magnificent. Since this process is so unpredictable and capricious, each of these prints will be unique and distinctly original.
