Leonard Freed
1929 – 2006
“Truth is what we are all seeking in art.” Leonard Freed believed that photos were set forever in a fleeting moment of time. Freed’s moving projects included the Civil Rights Movement, the stark reality of police work and the lives of New Yorkers, Jews, Germans, Italians and the Dutch. Through these projects he developed a keen sense of artistry while gaining a deeper understanding of his subjects and of himself. Since Freed’s passing, his wife and darkroom printer Brigitte continues his legacy. She works tirelessly publicizing the rich archive with gallery and museum exhibits, supporting films, and publishing new books all reflecting his enduring humanist photographic contributions.
